Human Power Project by Paolo Regis
How to translate into visual art the beauty of a mass meeting in a space, like cells experiencing the genre of collective consciousness when immersed in a public place, a busy street in New York, a place of worship, a market in Africa, a stadium in Milan, or a concert in Berlin? All this reveals our sixth senses, allowing us to understand a moment of the soul that can represent tension, great spiritual reflections, or common action.
Concept
The vision of the photographic project “Human Power” by photographer Paolo Regis (1979) is part of a visual vision that considers the human being as an energetic whole, influenced by forces acting upon them and those exerted by others. The artist analyzes, decomposes, and recomposes this force, manifested in the interaction and connection of two or more bodies. The movement of these spirits transforms into a flow of color, a living fiber of what the artist defines as human Puissance, human strength.
Artistic Approach
Paolo Regis’s artistic approach primarily focuses on individuals and their environments, captured in various phenomenology of their interactions and communication in historically decisive situations around the world. The beauty of a group of living beings is clearly visible in his photographs taken across the planet, from Bangladesh to London, exhibited in Europe and the United States.
Historical Context
At the end of the 19th century, impressionist painters posed the problem of the artist’s work, the ineffable and indefinite nature of perception. A century and a half later, photographers revisit this impression, reminding us of the immanence of life, a continuous cycle in perpetual motion.
Futurism Influence
In the early 20th century, futurist painters questioned movement and its role in societal changes through painting and sculpture. Cinema, performances, trains… Everything seemed to create movement at the beginning of the 20th century. The speed and effects produced on the image and body fascinated futurist artists. Giacomo Balla, in his work “Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash,” focused on the effects of natural movement on visual perception. Early cinema used a series of photographs taken in sequence to create movement, immortalizing invisible gestures in the human world, though perceived by our brain.
Paolo Regis’s Photography
Paolo Regis’s photographs show the value and beauty of human life in continuous movement, like a stop-frame of a continuous film, leading us to a larger and more spiritual message than technological.
Evolution of Artistic Perception
The evolution from the impressionists (focusing on the perception of human beings) to the futurists (comparing humans to machines and industry) finds in photography evidence of spiritual power, corresponding to our contemporary needs.
